A ‘GAME CHANGER’.
Our Innovation Portfolio Approach is
rapidly becoming a ‘game changer’ in
terms of innovation for a client.
As part of an overall innovation
programme approach, we have created
our “portfolio approach for contracts”,
whereby we design a client and contract
specific portfolio of innovation projects.
We recognise that our delivery
performance covers areas in the inovation
brochure, such as Health and Safety,
environment, customer and value for
money. We design and deliver a portfolio
of innovations for each client to offer them
a tailored range of innovations from our
overall Group portfolio.
innovation and was shortlisted in the 2018
Water Industry Awards.
We are proud to be working with several
of our contracts including Caledonia
Water Alliance (working on behalf of
Scottish Water) and Yorkshire Water,
as well as the Morrison Utility Services
SHEQ team and fellow M Group Services
divisions including Dyer & Butler (Winter
Resilience), Magdalene and
M Group Services Plant & Fleet Solutions.

MICRO VACUUM EXCAVATOR MINIMISES
DISRUPTION
A collaboration between Morrison Utility Services,
M Group Services Plant & Fleet Solutions and Vacuum
Excavation specialist Vac-Ex, has led to the launch
of a pioneering new ‘micro vacuum excavator’ that is
improving safety and minimising the impact of our work in
tight access locations.
The micro VAC-EX has been developed for our Smart
Metering teams working in often busy and congested locations
in and around London on behalf of Thames Water.
The unit is a compact, towable and self-contained machine
with the capacity to hold its own spoil and the facility to tip from
height which enables emptying into a wheelbarrow, skip, or
trailer.
The micro VAC-EX offers safe, non-aggressive and noninvasive excavation around buried utilities and non-removable
obstructions and is ideal for metering works, stop taps, silt
trenching and trial holes for investigation work and service pits.
Improved streetwork benefits include:
•
Minimised cable strike risk
•
A lightweight micro design for faster, more agile and more
efficient excavation
•
No spoil left on site – addressing a key customer concern
•
Small footprint of plant means work can be conducted
from the footpath
•
Narrow width allows easy movement of VAC-EX along
footpaths, reducing the disruption to both pedestrians and
road users
Operations Manager Dan Tonkin comments: “Our Smart
Metering teams deliver over 61,000 excavations per annum
whilst carrying out work on behalf of Thames Water. The micro
VAC-EX is proving particularly useful during excavations for
small digs in tight-access areas with congested underground
services and utilities”.
Head of Customer Service Dan Rhodes comments “The Micro
VAC-EX’s reduced size and improved agility is delivering
significant service benefits; its self-contained design is helping
to minimise the impact of the work being carried out as no
spoil is left on site – addressing the key customer concern of
site tidiness. This is a great example of the ways in which we
can take customer feedback and incorporate it into new and
progressive ways of working”.
