SNIFFER DRONES
UAV’s sniff for chlorine in treated water and gas leaks in hard-to-readh places.
In previous UAV projects, Morrison
Utility Services teams have used
multiple sensors carried by drones to
detect leakage (e.g. thermal sensors,
topographical sensors, LIDAR,
photosynthesis and plant growth
sensors).
As UAV’s become more establishes in
the utilities sector, further applications
are being identified and the
technology adapted to suit.
Morrison Utility Services has also
conducted tests to prove that UAVs
can effectively detect gas leakage in
hard to reach places, for example,
at altitude in multiple occupancy
buildings.
Now, chlorine detectors on drones are
being used to pinpoint the presence
of chlorine in treated water coming
through problem pipes. The drone
detectors can sniff out chlorine
in mains water at incredibly low
concentrations - tap water consists
of one part chlorine per million parts
water.
We are explaining how this
technology can be used to help solve
the leakage challenges faced by our
water utility division.

YORKSHIRE WATER USES KOBUS
Our Yorkshire Water, Water
Services Agreement contract
has been using ‘Kobus’, a pipe
pulling machine on repair and
maintenance contract works.
Kobus works by extracting an old
pipe from the ground and pulling
new pipe through the same bore
hole. The speed of the Kobus Pipe
Puller increases the number of
service replacements possible in a
single shift, consequently reducing
time spent on site.
Traffic disruption, noise pollution,
and the risk of damage to property
can all be minimised as only two
relatively small excavations are
required at each end of the pipe
being extracted. Kobus avoids many
excavations across roads too.
trees or shrubbery, as the angle of
the banking would otherwise pose
Health & Safety issues.”
Mark Shackleton comments:
“New lengths of PE pipe can be
installed to replace up to 25 meters
of lead, copper and galvanised
steel in one go. This eliminates the
need for open cut techniques at
road crossings, minimising traffic
disruption and costly reinstatements.
We have the kit and trained teams. If
you believe Kobus Pipe Puller could
support your contract, please e-mail

Once the machine has been

new equipment is ideal for renewing

GEOSPATIAL MAPPING
As part of the Thames Water Infrastructure Alliance,
Morrison Utility Services has introduced a new
geospatial mapping solution to highlight and manage
signage, lighting and guarding across its operations.
The Streetworks Information Management System (SwIMS)
is a cloud based solution that is providing the Alliance
team with improved efficiencies and visibility of ongoing
operations by geo-tagging depot locations, as well as the
nearest dig team and logistics drivers, ensuring reduced
delays to projects, reduced disruption for the public and
maximised use of these resources.

our clients. The North London Monitoring, Assurance &
Compliance Team is continuously striving to move the
business forward thorough the application of Intelligent
Innovations.”
