QUIETER WORKING TECHNOLOGIES
As part of Yorkshire Water’s initiative to introduce 24/7 working, Morrison Utility
Services is looking at solutions that will enable more efficient and quieter ways of
working.
One example has been the introduction of Acoustic Barriers. The barriers deliver
significant customer service benefits including the reduction of noise, dust and debris
from street works. The barriers can also be moved easily and quickly as works progress
along a stretch of road, helping to improve customer relations and enhance onsite working
conditions.
Innovation Programme Manager Mark Shackleton comments: “The introduction of acoustic
barriers will allow our teams to extend site operating hours to ensure that they get the job
done day or night, on time and on budget with minimal disruption for local residents in the
areas we are working.”

STANDING DESKS FOR STAFF WELLBEING
It goes without saying that a safe
and healthy work environment is a
productive work environment.
Studies have linked excessive sitting
with an increased risk of diabetes, heart
disease and some types of cancer. Sitting
for extended periods is also thought to
slow the metabolism which affects the
body’s ability to regulate blood sugar,
blood pressure and break down body fat.
Creating an ergonomically sound
workspace for our people therefore makes
good sense and Data Analyst John Bristow
is leading a trial in our Bristol office of a
new ergonomic ‘sit/stand’ desk concept.
The desk allows users to alternate
between sitting and standing over the
course of a working day.
Jon comments: “I spend the majority of
my time sitting, with the occasional trip to
the printer, or the kettle. It’s not that I don’t
like moving around, but force of habit gets
me settled back into my chair promptly.
Through a combination of occasional back
pain and afternoon tiredness, I decided
to undertake some research and found
positive feedback from organisations that
had adopted the use of sit/stand desks.
In some countries, the benefits have led
to the desks being provided to all office
based staff as a compulsory requirement.”
